Increasingly, holistic treatment of the broad range of addictions is taking into account the important role of nutrients in rebalancing body chemistry naturally in order to provide the best possible environment and support for achieving and maintaining the hard work of recovery. Some pioneering researchers have recognized for more than half a century that deficiencies in some of the body’s own chemistry, whose effects are exacerbated by toxins, truly do make that first year of recovery a “miracle.” But only in recent years have practitioners from a number of disciplines begun to systematically apply these principles to treating addictions on a broad scale. Much of this published material is still complex, technical and inaccessible for many lay readers, making it hard to involve clients as full partners in their own recovery. New attitudes toward addictions and the patient’s role in her own recovery have created a gap in how we assist people to change their lives.

Now, Rebooting Your Brain Chemistry Without Sugar, Drugs or Alcohol fills that gap. Written in clear, accessible language, this book provides an introduction for those in early recovery to go beyond the traditional moral and psychological approaches to addiction, and a context to understand these important topics:

  • how ideas about addiction and recovery are changing
  • the basics of brain biochemistry and the role of neurotransmitters in substance cravings, mood swings, anxiety and dysfunctional behavior
  • healing your GI tract after heavy metal overload
  • how to tell what specific nutrient deficiencies and toxins may be effecting your physical well-being & mood, making Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome worse
    • trouble-shooting the system, detoxifying and steps to “re-booting”
    • a guide to resources, further research and leaders in the field
